Sussex Martlets CC 1905-2016 – A Miscellany

Sussex Martlets have long been the county’s leading wandering cricket team. At the end of last year Peter Hartland produced and posted on the Sussex Martlets Cricket Club website the main records of the club since its formation. The Sussex Cricket Museum felt that this was worthy of a larger audience and with Peter’s permission decided to make it one of their publications for 2017. Nicholas Sharp and Norman Epps took on the editorship and expanded the original copy which included articles on Gerry Campbell, Eddie Harrison and Sandy Ross. The editors added articles on the top score for the Martlets, a small matter of 330 not out and the best bowling performance.

The 40 page booklet is enhanced with several photographs including one of the Martlet team in 1910 which included Arthur Conan Doyle, as well as a scarce one of the top scorer. The editors also discovered that a team named Sussex Martlets played association football to a high standard in the 1890s but initial research has yet to provide a link to the cricketing Martlets.

John Barclay kindly agreed to write the foreword and he has also signed all 100 copies of the limited edition that is priced at £15 plus £2 postage. Patrons of the museum receive a free copy.

Copies may be obtained from the Sussex Cricket Museum, Peter Hartland of the Sussex Martlets, Jon Filby, Secretary to Sussex Cricket Museum and Member of Sussex Martlets or  Nicholas Sharp - email sharp554@btinternet.com – phone 0208.660.8255.
